Lets see... I had a LOT of hamsters and gerbils before (18 hamsters and 32 gerbils) The thing to get them is pipes, and something new every once in a while. If you don't like spending too much money on your hamster(s), then buy 3 or more things (like cages maybe, some toys and such) and every month or few weeks or so, take one away, and replace with a "new" toy. Keep doing that with the same or even new toys, and each time, they'll be excited that you got them a "new" play thing!
I use that on my birds and my dwarf hamster. It works pretty well, but don't forget to wash and/or replace toys when needed. It's a real money saver!

They love to chew (and play in) things up for their bedding. Depending on how much room is in his cage....you can put cardboard items such as anything from an empty toilet paper roller, or paper towel roller.....to a pop-tart box, instant oatmeal box, even cereal box. you get the idea. If need be, you could get a small aquarium and place a screen top on it, for an alternate cage. Stores also sell a clear ball that you can put him in....and he can run all over the house! Of course, if you have a cat or large dog, you might need to confine them to another room while your hamster plays.

I got this play pen from wal-mart that I set up in my living room. And then I got a bunch of toys, tunnels, ect and make a playground on my floor for my gerbils to play in. It's different everyday and that's what I do for there daily fun time outside the cage. It's a lot of fun. I had hamsters at one time, but mine were pretty lazy.

The only thing I can think of that might be any uise is a rotastak cage, they have a variety of pipes, tubes and different toys that you can keep adding to and changing round about . They can be quite expensive though.

Cardboard boxes (tissue boxes are great) to nest in and destroy. Carboard inners of kitchen rolls etc. Dog biscuits to gnaw on. Hamster ball....great to let the hamster explore the house in.

have a look at the rotastack collection. these are a make of hamster housing which have things like digging sections and mazes and masses of tunnels which u each buy seperate. my friend has one for her hamster and its huge! takes her an hour and half to clean it all - oh and u can never ever find which section her hamster is in lol. i used to have rotastack when i had a hamster and they are really good quality things.

try making a frame from wood then make obstacles out of card for him to climb over and walk round but put wire mesh over the top of the frame so he can't escape! or get an old fish tank and fill it with sawdust and bury empty loo roll tubes with food in. mine loved that!!

Give it a toilet paper tube.
Make a cardboard box house.
You can buy it more toys at a petstore! Like plastic toys and wood toys!
