If you look on a map of western North Carolina (out near the border with Georgia) you will see a little town called Sapphire. A little further west, in Highlands, is one of the very few places in the US where you can find ruby and sapphire. They are both aluminum minerals, aluminum oxide (Al2O3) with impurities. They are very hard stones (the next hardest to diamond) and when their crystals are free of flaws and transparent colors, they are highly prized gem stones. There are plenty of other sites to find sand, gravel, building stone, red clay for bricks, etc. But I thouht you would find this the most interesting.
