Usually it would mean an animal may or may not have been there. Someone might have been holding a severed animal limb makeing the footprints then their tracks got blown over by the wind.

Uh, that an animal has walked there and a man has seen it and the wind hasn't smoothed it out? Kind of like our lives - leaving footprints.

That would be 'tracks'. In the desert that means that an animal has proceeded you along this path & not too very long ago either or else the wind would have wiped the tracks clean.
