Let's assume that you have windows XP. Click on my computer, right click on C Drive and select the bottom option - properties. Now select the tools tab, in there select check for errors, in the options tick both boxes to repair errors and do a surface scan. It will complain that it can't do it, and do you want to schedule it for next time the computer boots. Select yes.
When the computer reboots it will stop half way through booting and perform the check. This could take up to a few hours, walk away and leave it. Once it boots try defrag again, if it still doesn;t work, boot the computer into safe mode (press F8 several times when the computer first starts) and run defrag from safe mode.
If it STILL won't run you need expert help.

which potential you will desire to would desire to run chkdsk. chkdsk is a command line command. do exactly homestead windows key+R, and form in "cmd". a command line window would desire to open, and then form in: "chkdsk /f C:" What this does is it tests the C tension for errors and then fixes them. If it says that the disk is at the instant locked or it cant get right of entry to it, then reboot the computer. collectively as rebooting, the disk would be checked and upon startup, you are able to commence defragging.

When your computer is booting up keep hitting the F8 key you will get a list of options. One of them is to Start the computer in Safe Mode.Do this and then run the defrag program. This should allow it to run through.Don't touch the keyboard or mouse while it is defragmenting.

Make sure you are not connected to the internet, or that you are not networked to other computers in your house. Background task will cause your computer to stop in the middle of defrag. If you have high speed internet or networked computers, unplug your network cable.

The problem could be a background task running which is conflicting with de-frag. Make sure no other programmes are running by using 'control, alt delete' then 'end task' to close any other programmes.

If you're running Windows LIVE on XP you can't defrag - it's a bug that they haven't worked around yet. it locks down access to your C: drive and won't let you defrag.

12% free space is required to defrag ( if you have less clean it first - temporary files - recycle bin )
