sooooo. when i first removed the cap-rotor-cup-condensor assembly i cleaned it with carb cleaner because for some odd reason there were fuel deposits all over (a 64 corvair, been sitting for 31 years). well i proceded to hose it down... this was a week ago. today i tried to start the engine an there was no spark. i wnet and got new plugs, nothing. i was advised that there might be water in the distributor houseing and there was, just a lil.that has been cleaned out, but i still thik there might be more water and or fuel gunk down in the shaft, a place i can not get to because i have NO idea how to re-time it. help?

i tried everyones sugesstion and still nothing, the only thing i could ponder is that its grounding out... do you think it would be just so much simpler to convert from point to electonic?

the coil that i have been trying to do all this with is brand new, the pont and condensor as well, as it appears there is no source of a ground out. all electricity is flowing to the coil, and the condensor, just no spark. i have ordered the conversion and going to hope for the best.

Make sure you gap the NEW points at .017 and be sure to replace the condenser, and most of all the COIL , it's gone bad after all those years of sitting . And after this it should start !!!!!!!!!!!

Buy an in line spark tester. It's like a test light for your ignition system and costs less then 10 dollars. Pull the plug wire out of your coil, insert one end of the spark tester in the coil and attach the plug wire to the other end. Have someone turn the car over and see if the tester flashes. This can also be used on each spark plug to see if they are firing fine. The spark should flash the light in perfect repitition. If it doesn't flash some times then there is a problem with the system where you hooked it up. I'm just letting you know that this tool can be used for more than just the coil wire. If not. take a regular automotive test light ....Also under 10 dollars and see if the coil is getting 12 volts to it. if not,Check your fuses or trace the wire as and look for a break in it.
12 volts to the coil,
See if coil is putting out spark.
To clean out a distributor cap of all moisture spray PBlaster in the cap and on the rotor. W D 40 works also. These are moisture displacer's. just wiping out the distributor is not good enough trust me. If the coil is getting 12 volts but not putting out spark replace it.
But start with the coil.If there is something wrong with it you won't get any spark to anything!

take the coil wire going to the distributor cap off at the distributor. have someone to turn the engine over and hold the end of the coil wire about and 1/8 of and inch off bare metal see if it arcs fire. if it does then connect it back to the cap . then take a plug wire loose and connect an old plug to it. do the same to see if it is firing. if it is then do what i told you before. squirt a little oil back in the spark plug holes each one of them the same. this builds the compression back up.it will start.you can email me if youd like tooI i can start it for you but only thru email. because we are more than likely really far apart.

okay first you need to take a deep breath and relax. after sittting 31 years a little more time is okay. buy a service manual for this car, that is your first step. check the points for the distributor they might need to be replaced. once you have the service manual for the car you can start checking things out step by step (and the book will tell/show you how.
Secondly, you might want to consider towing the car to a repair facility and have them get it running for you. you can pull a lot of hair out on a car that old unless you really know what you are doing. not to mention that if a repair facility does the work you get the added bonus of a warrenty on the work that is done. :)

first,i would never used carburetor to clean electrical.one spark is all it takes to light a fire.if there was fuel or oil deposit inside the distributor, this indicate the distributor bushing is worn which cause oil to seap in.replace the distributor before you replace cap, rotor,or condenser.if you have no spark, make sure the points gap is correct.
