The night life in Athens is fantastic as you'd expect from a major European capital.
There is so much to do that you could waste a lot of time milling around wondering which place to go in (like I did the first few times I went there).
Its been a little while since I've been there, so I hope these tips are all still relevant.
There is a listings magazine published on Thursdays called Athinorama and another called Downtown which comes out on a Friday - these list major events, concerts, clubs, etc that are going on that week. You can also find listings in the daily English paper Athens News. You can buy all of these at the kiosks that you can't miss around Athens.
Depending on when you're out there, check to see if there is anything going on at the Herodes Atticus Theatre at the foot of the Acropolis (normally ballet or opera) - whether you like classical music or not, the experience and the location is worth the price of the ticket.
For traditional Greek music try Bio-Bio or the Diogenis Palace both in Leof A Syngrou, Kallithea - for rock music Rodon at Marni in Vathis, jazz try the Half Note at Trivonianou in Stadio.
Night clubs seem to come and go rather quickly, but I've enjoyed La Mamounia and the Camel Club at Vouliagmenis in the past.
As regards eating out, these are some of my faves,
Strofi, Rovertou Gkalli, near the Acropolis - old and quaint but rooftop views of the Parthenon
Vivliothiki, Plateia Filikis Etaireias, Kolonaki - good for romantic meals
Senor Frog, Lykavittos Hill - Mexican food and good views of the city
Kouti, Adrianou, Monastiraki - fresh food and overlooks the Agora
To Gerani, Tripodon, Plaka - balcony seating, good fried Greek food
To Diporto, Sokratous, Psyrri - archetypal taverna, simple menu
Apotsos, Panepestimiou, Syntagma - excellent mezedes
Most of all - don't be frightened to wander around and poke your nose in to see what somewhere is like.
Enjoy - hope you love it as much as I do.

Athens has a great night life. You can begin in PLAKA the old Athens (under the Acropolis) and quite touristy. Lots of tavernas and bars. Then on to PSI RI, this used to be the be old flea area (PSIRI meaning flea) and is now very famous for its nightlife and bars and clubs. Also there is BOURNAZI which is in the West of Athens which is a very up coming area especially for night life. Full of bars and clubs. In the centre of Athens is SYNTAGMA Square (Constitution Square) and down the road from there is ONOMIA (not so nice anymore). There are plenty of BOUZOUKI CLUBS in SYNGROU AVENUE and towards the sea side areas around VOULA and GLYFADA. These open after mid night and go on until morning.
Of course Athens also has the historical sites, like the ACROPOLIS, the Ancient AGORA (Market), PLAKA - the flea market, LYCAVITOS (a charming little church on the highest point of Attica overlooking all Athens - great sunsets) About 40 minutes out of Athens is CAPE SOUNION with the temple of Poseidon.
There is always something going on in Athens at all times of the year.
You are sure to have a great time.

Lived in Athens fr 20 years so....
Psiri area, near Syndagma square. Full of trendy nice bars playing really good music.
Thysion area; lovely bars & cafeterias spilling out onto the street. Drinks reasonibly cheap. (Please note, Greek alcoholic measures are like X5 those found here in the U.K!)
Lycavitos; a lovely hill with a church right at the top. The views from up here are amazing. You get to see a panormamic view of the whole city.
Syngrou avenue;the soho of Athens. Be careful, full of prostitutes & transvestites!
Omonia square; used to be full of junkies and pick pocketers so be careful.
Glyfada-east Athens; go for your boutique shopping here, loads of cafe bars (albeit very posh), nice beaches scattered all along the appollo coast. Think about this, where else in the world can you go for a decent swim in a clean sea in a capitol city?!
For clubs head down to central Athens; Psiri area, or very nice as well: Tourkolimano vacinity. There's some nice clubs also in Glyfada - but they are quite posh.
Hope this helps! Enjoy yourself!

There is so much history that if you read up on it before hand you will get so excited by it that you won't have time for the nightlife! Having said that there are fantastic restaurants and bars all over with great wine and great food at even greater prices!
