DSL is great. I've had it for over 6 years.

Cheaper than cable (I HATE MY CABLE COMPANY)

Not as fast as cable, all the time, but with cable you share the node with many others in your area. This can slow down your speed to dial up or worse. So when the neigbors kids are downloading a bunch of music and videos your speed will drop like a rock.

DSL is a private connection.
No line sharing

It can vary a great deal depending on the exact demographics and line quality, but overall cable broadband tend to be better than DSL. Coax TV cable is designed for moving real-time video, and ordinary phone lines are not. Phone lines are also usually older and more likely to have transmission problems. If your digital cable TV works, cable broadband will work, but with DSL you often don't know until you've tried whether your particular house is an unlucky one.

While a cable modem made be faster you have to share the line with the people on the 'node' which can slow your internet down to a crawl. DSL is a private line but can be susceptible to the weather and noise. Both have there issues.
