I know they deal with patients with serious injuries and stuff...it sounds a lot like ER docs. Are they the same thing? If not what kind of training do they do? I've never heard of a "trauma surgery" residency...

You are right in saying that doctors and nurses in emergency department deal with serious injuries, their role in trauma is to stabilise the casualty, and and find the extent of the victims injuries, and contact the trauma team if they have not already being contacted, usually they are waiting when a victim is bought in, and usually they will work with the E.R team to stabilise the victim, before heading off to surgery.

The trauma surgeon is called in to repair and treat the victims injuries as best as they can, taking into consideration the type and nature of the injuries sustained. Trauma surgeon have done a trauma residency.

They are practically the same thing. When the ER is full they will get patients, and when the ER "passes down" the patient after he or she is somewhat stablized, they are passed down to trauma surgeons for major repairs. ER docs don't always do surgery...
