depends on what the load is above the headers.....if exterior wall window header no more than 6'.....and remember to double the jacks on each end......if interior header with no load above then 6'........email me and tell me how u plan to use them and i can tell u what u can do as far as spanning.........

Depending on the load and the area where you live, a standard doubled 2"X10" header is good for about a 12' span. You can increase the span and load by using an engineered lumber product like a Micro-Lam. Your local lumber yard (Not Home Depot, or Lowe's) should have access to the information you need. Even with 4-2"x10"'s your only going to get about 12' of span max.

If I was building a 12 foot header I would nail two together and make it a 4 x 10. All my headers I substituted iron headers.

You have to use the snow load - which is 40 lb - looks like 6' tops.
