Hi all,

My brother is returning from the service shortly, and I'd like to suprise him with a new left handed acoustic guitar. Nothing too cheap - I'm able to spend up to $500.

Any suggestion appreciated. Thanks!

Martin is WAY out of the price range you're looking at.There has never been a Washburn built whos price exceeds that of a Martin.Ovation has a lower line of acoustics that you can consider. They play nicely and are comfortable but they sound thin. Those are called Celebrity but they still say Ovation.Yamaha make some good sounding acoustics.Guild also make semi student models but I'm afraid I can't remember the name they sell under.Stay away from the less expensive Fender models. They don't compare to the American line.Left handed instruments are always more expensive. They are less in demand and the companies have to recover retooling costs.
I know that there is one more that I'd recommend but the name escapes me.I'll come back and do an edit if I remember. E mail me if you come across something that you are wondering about.
Edit:Takamine is the other company I was thinking of.Unfortunately almost everything I've listed is Japanese.Takamine are probably yhe best for that price range.American instruments are better and more expensive.

How 'bout a Taylor Big Baby, 210 or 110? I hope you have some experience yourself so you could try them out. My favorite cheap thundercannon is the Martin D-15, probably the cheapest American solid Body you can get, mahagony and LOUD. Don't discount Ebay, may be a good way at finding a host of lefty's out there at a good discount. Musicians Freind (Guitar Center's online brother) is also good too...

Yamaha, Martin, Ovation, Washburn. The latter being the most expensive. You CAN negotiate price at music stores btw. I fyou get a classical style guitar, all you have to do is put the strings on the other way, because the neck is the same width all the way through.

Unfortunately, "up to $500." is pretty cheap for a decent quality new acoustic guitar. Check website musiciansfriend.com, they usually got some things that will satisfy both your wallet and your bro.

Go to musiciansfriend.com

They have quite a selection there. I've bought several guitars/drums/basses from them.
