Waylon Jennings. Nope, he did not die on a later plane crash but had a very successful career in music and wrote about the indicident in his autobiography.

Tommy Allsup tossed for the seat and Richie one the toss and was on the plane. He(Tommy) was a back up musician for either Buddy Holly or Waylon Jennings. Waylen gave his seat to Jiles P. Richardson( The Big Bopper) because he was sick.

Waylon Jennings
(made semi-famous for singing the theme to The Dukes of Hazzard tv show)
I think that the coin toss may have been dramatized in the movie LaBamba. Waylon mentions on his website that he gave up his seat the "Big Bopper" cause the Bopper had a cold.

"Over the years, the list of people who "gave up a seat" on this ill-fated flight has grown to rival the list of persons claiming to have been invited to Sharon Tate's "quiet evening at home" the night the Manson family struck. Although Buddy Holly initially may have asked around to find other tour members willing to share the cost of chartering a plane (as Dion DiMucci claims), the only persons who committed to fly on it with Holly were his two fellow band members, Tommy Allsup and Waylon Jennings. J.P. Richardson, who was coming down with the flu, managed to talk Jennings into giving up his seat so that he could arrive at the next tour stop early and have a little extra time to visit a doctor. It was Waylon Jennings who was a country singer. His best known song is "Good Ol' Boys" which was used as the theme to "The Dukes Of Hazzard" (the t.v. show). And you almost got it right-he didn't lose the coin toss to Ritchie Valens-he lost it to Buddy Holly.

It was Waylon Jennings, he played for Buddy Holly's band (He was Holly's lead guitarist). Oh, yeah, and it is Ritchie Valens, not Richie Valen.

I believe you are talking about Paul Anka. Though, I don't think he lost a coin toss, I think he gave up his seat on a heated plane in order to take a BUS whose heater was on the fritz. But that could be just urban legend.
