Depends on what state you are in. Different states have different laws. Here in Alabama even if I am running lights and siren (code 3) I can not buts a red light. I must come to a complete stop. This means even if I can see the intersection is clear well in advance of going thru. In addition, when running code 3 you will likely be concidered at fault for any accident you are involved in if you are passing another vehicle. Other states have laws protecting emergency vehicles and some have similar ones.

In the UK they have the same rights as the police - i.e they can treat a red light as a 'give way' when on the way to an emergency or transporting a time-critical patient. This means that by law they should wait until the traffic has cleared before making their way across. In reality people give way to them, and rightly so. Although having said that, if you obstruct them, you could probably be charged with something like obstructing a public servant.....

In the US any emergency vehicle can go through a red light while running code (lights/sirens) Usually though they will try and MIRT the stoplight first. MIRT is a device that changes the light to greeen.

As long as they have their lights and sirens on, and they pause to check if it's clear, they can go through just like a police car or fire truck!

Of course- they need to hurry as much as they can in order to save lives. (Besides, it looks so cool when they drive through red lights.)
