First spray it good with Scrubbing Bubbles and wipe it down. Then cut a lemon in half and rub it on the walls of the microwave. Cook for 1 minute and wipe it down again. Get in the habit of covering the food when you heat it. I use wax paper sheets that are already cut into a 8x8 size.

Unless it is really rotten, whatever food you cook in it will leave it's own odor. You will have a new smell each time you cook. I use mine a lot and I never notice a lingering odor. Sometimes fatty meats will splatter, I think wipe the walls down with Windex. Generally I cover food or wrap like bacon in paper towels.
