There are 3 main types of diabetes.
1. Type 1 (formally called juvenile onset)-people get this because the cells in their body don't recoginize the insulin their body makes and their blood sugar gets too high. These are generally the ones that need to take insulin.
2. Type 2 (formally called adult onset)-people get this because their body doesn't make enough insulin, so again their blood sugar is too high. These are the people that can control their diabetes through diet and exercise.
3. Gestational diabetes-this is the type some women have when they are pregnant. The mother's body doesn't make enough insulin for the mother and the baby. The mother's blood sugar goes too high. They can either take insulin (through shots) or control it with diet and exercise. This type may or may not go away after the pregnancy. If they continue to be diabetic after the pregnancy they are considered type 2.

There is also a rare type (called "other diabetes"). This is where people were in a car accident or something and their pancreas is injured. They also have to take insulin.

Numerous reasons. See Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (Murray & Pizzorno) for a good exposition and advice on this disease.
