how and why was a small group of spaniards able to conquer millions of indians with such rapidity in the 16 century?

1. The Aztecs' govt. was more centralized and stable. When the Spaniards captured Montezuma, they disrupted that whole stability and thus, conquered the civilization. It was easier to conquer groups of Indians such as these rather than the much more nomadic peoples that lived in South America, such as the Guarini (rent "The Mission"....great film).

2. Aztec weaponry was useless against the metal swords of the Spaniards. Try using a wooden spear against a metal sword and see what happens. Once their military leader was taken out by the Spaniards, the Aztec army turned around and ran.

a million. The Mexicans are the fashionable people who stay in the area. they seem to be a blend of close by considered necessary American indians and the descendants of Spanish colonists. The Spanish conquered the Aztecs, no longer the Mexicans. 2. The Aztecs had spears, the Spanish had weapons.

The Spaniards were ready to commit genocide which they did. The Native Americans killed/hunted for survival, the Europeans killed/hunted for pleasure.

They played on the indians fears of their gods
They uninted opposing native forces to fight the Aztecs those who had been conquered but not assimilated to Aztec culture

there were slightly more spaniards than a small group. spaniards had guns. natives did not. spaniards were extremely cruel which the natives didn't understand so they ceded fairly rapidly.
