He sleeps fine at night (anywhere from 6 - 8 hours) and can put himself to sleep in the crib at night just fine, it's the naps in the day he refuses to take - when we put him in his bassinet in the living room he cries and cries and cannot put himself to sleep (even though he is exhausted)...what can we do to get him to take naps without being rocked to sleep?!

I did forget to mention that he has a swing and it's the same thing, if we put him in the swing for his nap he cries up a storm! No matter how slow or fast you swing him - even with music and white noise he refuses to sleep even though he's exhausted!

What is wrong with rocking him? If he sleeps fine at night then he obviously isnt spoiled really awful. It is your baby and they are only little once. Believe me the real spoiling problems come later on. He only wants the comfort of you because he is still adjusting to the big world outside.

How about putting his bassinet in his room, or the room he sleeps in at night? This might help, also try to darken the room until he goes to sleep, then turn the lights on, or open the shades, as it's important for the baby to feel that this is a nap, not his night sleep. You can also try to turn on some light music, or some nursery rhymes close by.
Good luck

your baby is smart to not want to nap, put himself asleep because he knows there is still other things going on in his house. He falls asleep by himself at night knowing there won't be anything he will be missing out on. This sounds like your son is very observant..........thats a good thing. If you want him to fall asleep on his own when you know he is that exhausted then play one of those sounds of nature cd's and let him cry for a little bit it's good for their lungs, and helps along the lines with the whole spoiling thing (believe me you don't want that) and it won't take but about 5 minuites with that nature music playing but if he continues to cry then he might not be that tired and I wouldn't recommend on letting him cry too long. But at some point they won't nap anymore they will be to involved at what is going on in the house that he want's to be apart of.

I bought my son a swing and let him swing his entire nap. I even had to do this at night until he was about 4 months old.

Have you tried a bouncy seat yet. I know you said you tried a swing, but a bouncy seat is a little different. When my son gets tired I put him in his bouncy seat and rock the bouncy seat with my foot which puts him to sleep.

I just had a parenting class on this! He has no idea how to do what is called "Self-soothing" he has to learn it. this is just a rough draft on touching base.
OK I can not remember the docs name but if you go on americanbabies.com they tell you this procedure that you and your partner have to do together. you have to let him cry. first for 10 mins go to him do not touch him and tell him he is OK. then 15 mins do it again. it reassures him that you are there and he has nothing to worry about.
P.S. he is a little young. this idea is for babies 6 months but I think I would work with your doc or maybe that swing can be your best friend for a while!

mine used to do that to... used to sleep fine in his crib at night, during the day, didn't want to sleep in the swing, in the living room, until one day, i put him in his crib during the day and guess what he fell asleep... we figured out that when he sleeps he wants his bed... ever since i did that, now putting him to sleep during the day is even easier at night....

Don't worry, it won't last forever.
Rock him to sleep now, before you know it, he'll be three or four, and won't want mommy rocking him to sleep anymore...they're only babies once, indulge them while you can!
