a Republic is a country (typically a single nation) that is governed by the will, direct or represented of its citizens. Technically, all modern representative democracies are republics, even if they retain a royal head of state, since the actual governing is done by people who are chosen by the citizenry, not the king. In older time, government could be a prerogative of only part of the citizenry, typically the lanholding classes. Good examples of this are the Roman Republic, and medieval Iceland.
An Empire is generally seen as characterized by an autocratic Emperor. This is not quite true. The late Roman Republic was actually an empire (Imperium : rule). In reality, an Empire happens when one nation assumes rule over one or more other countries or nations.
Rome Ruled over most of the Mediterranean area, plus France, the south of Britain, and big chunks of central Europe ; the Habsburgs ruled over Austria, Hungary, parts of the Balkans and Czchoslovakia, and at times even spain and the Netherlands ; Napoleon's empire encompassed not only France, but Spain, Italy, and parts of Germany andthe Hapsburgs' empire ; and the British empire extended to India,(including Pakistan, Afghanistan, and neighbouring areas like Bangladesh and Burma), Canada, a large Chunk of the USA until 1776, some of the West Indies, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and a number of other places.

a republic is usually a confederation of states that exists as a single nationlike entity. it has democratic principles and representative government. it is usually all contiguous parts geographically, but perhaps some scattered elements like the USA has a few territories etc . one exception was the roman empire called themselves the republic of rome, but that was in referenec to the head of the empire, Rome and did not include all the slave states of its empire. Citizens of the republic of rome had special privileges over citizens of the rest of the empire. so ROME was both a republic and an empire.
an empire is typically larger and may have parts that are not contiguous with others and may consist of many former nations that have been conquered or annexed. it is seldom democratic, perhaps never. it must have an emperor to be a true empire, although admittedly the holy roman empire was neither holy, nor roman nor an empire. The emperor is royal and has vast unlimited personal power over his domain. there may be kings beneath him. he typically appoints governors of conquered and occupied lands to administer his affairs while the former or new KING may be just a puppet. there is no voting. it is a monarchy

Republic is voted in and you hate him you can vote him out.
Most empires are run by a king or a dictatorship and he elects himself and if you don't like it keep it to yourself or they cut your tongue out. Or throw you off a building.
