A Modem is essentially a converter for computer modem stands for Modulate/Demodulate.

Computers communicate via a format called digital signals however you can't send these digital signals over a telephone line because they only accept Analog signals.

The Modem is placed between the computer and the telephone line and changes the signal from digital to analog and sends it over the telephone line...once it reaches the other end the analog signal goes into another modem and that modem converts the signal from analog back to a digital format that the other computer can understand.

the word "modem" is a contraction of the words modulator-demodulator. A modem is typically used to send digital data over a phone line.
The sending modem modulates the data into a signal that is compatible with the phone line, and the receiving modem demodulates the signal back into digital data. Wireless modems convert digital data into radio signals and back.
