Ulysses S. Grant was able to stabilize his forces and retained control of the field - the Confederates withdrew in defeat. It was an extremely bloody battle - the first real battle of the Civil War, and established that the war was going to be hard fought and lengthy.

It is probably the only battle, and certainly the only major battle, of the Civil War in which the Confederates had numerical superiority. Neverthe less, the Union troops were rallied and carried the battle to victory.

William T. Sherman, who had been viewed with great concern and trepidation before the battle, was a rock. His troops stood their ground and thousands of Confederates died trying to dislodge Sherman. He showed himself to be one of the most effective commanders of that War.
