first download the yahoo messenger application, install the software, sign in with your username and password. use the drop down lists from the top menu bar to add contacts etc.

First, you log in with your screenname and password. Then, if your friends also have yahoo, add them to your messanger list by clicking on the smiley with a plus sign on it, typing in their yahoo screenname, and then, press "next" twice, and voila ^_^
You can meet people on yahoo through here or on the avatar message boards ^_^
