It's a German word formed from the full name National Socialist Party. The spelling "Nazi" is the first four letters of the German word for national.

Nazi was the nickname for the German political party the NSDP. The National Socialist Democratic Party. That was Hitler's party which grew out of the German Worker's Party. The German worker's party started after world war one and by 1928 had turned into the NSDP. Nazi was just a nickname for NSDP

Actually, the correct acronym is NSDAP.
The "word" Nazi is properly pronounced "Nat-zee" not "Nah-zee" or "Naa-zee". The pronunciation comes from the German pronunciation, not the English.
