Okay, this had been on my mind for a long time. When a movie comes out they post how much it made in the theaters on box office websites. Well, do they just post how much $ they made form theaters, or dvds too? So, lke is POTC 2 is in 6th place rihgt now, and it made like 20 million dollars from selling dvds, would the 20 million count in the box office or no? also, if not is there a website that says how much money a movie made all together (theater, and dvd)

DVD sales only count in DVD charts and even then it is split up by category.

Box office success is measured by bums on seats therefore how much people pay to go and see the movie as a total over a week.

The money is shown as a gross income for the movie before anybody gets a cut... e.g. the stars, producers, distributor, movie theatre, the advertisers, studio etc etc.

Ya know, this has bothered me too.
They always say this movie beat sales of that movie to be the all time grosser. I mean, thats nice, but when Titanic in 2000 beat out ET from 1982 in money, what does that prove? Tickets in '82 were 3 bucks, now theyre 10.
They should do it by the number of seats/tickets sold, not the amount it made!

And goto boxofficemojo.com. That gives you numbers of sales.

They get it from the movie theater ticket price.
