mistybudd got the correct answer, it means to be as precise as a die cut in engineering, if the die which was cut wasnt true, then the screw, nut or bolt being cut would not fit, as it had to be "true" ie precise to the specifications, the saying was associated with true as in honesty, therefore saying someone is as "straight as a die" means he is reliable and trustworthy

Actually straight as a die and it means completely honest. Propabably comes from a die cutter in engineering who has to cut absolutely dead straight otherwise the nut/screw combination would never work.

i think you mean di, as in dice, it has to be straight all the way round so it will land on all the numbers.

yes, its streight as a die, a die is an old name for a plumb line that is used to hang wallpaper (lead weight on the end of a peice of string, always hangs perfectly true) so streight as a die.
