One theory I saw on tv recently was that way back in the old old olden days, before tribes had created forms of communication that we know today the leader of the tribe would yawn and the other tribesman would yawn back to signal that they were all ready for a rest as it was beneficial to them to all rest together ie. a survival tactic. Apparently this is just a habit that has been passed down through the generations. There were other theories aswell but unfortunately I can't remember them!

It is possible that yawns are contagious because at one time in evolutionary history, the yawn served to coordinate the social behavior of a group of animals. When one member of the group yawned to signal an event, all the other members of the group also yawned. Yawns may still be contagious these days because of a leftover response (a "vestigial" response) that is not used anymore. None of this has been proven true and yawns are still one of the mysteries of the mind.

I'm not sure, but yawning in some animals appears to be a form of communication. For example male baboons yawn more than females and the males have the bigger canine teeth, so it might be some sort of display. Then again, it might be because they are lazier than the females.

a yawn is supposed to send extra oxygen to the brain to give it a kick start as it is becoming sluggish. it also lets you know that you are tired or even bored.

it seems that everyone around you catches it, even talking about it makes you yawn. I think it must be a reflex action, one does it everyone does it.
