"awkward" is supposed to be "awkward," awkward, isn't it?

I guess because it is a combination of Awk plus the word Ward. Awk is a word that comes from the Norse or Icelandic people.
Ward is used with other words as well such as For-,To-,Way-,Up-,Down-,Back-, etc.

Because it's the only common English word with the "WKW" combination. (I don't consider "hawkweed" common.) :o)
