If the guy is licensed, bonded, insured etc... and the tree is quite large, and he will also be doing the stump removal, between 3000 and 4000 is about right.

If you dont give a %&$! about getting rid of the tree, you can get someone who is NOT insured for about 1000 to 2000. But you run that risk of if they get injured, they can turn around and sue you. Of course, its just money.

It can be quite expensive to remove a tree, a lot depends on where it is and how close they can get to the tree. I would get 2-3 more bids befor letting anyone cut your tree and befor letting anyone start the job make sure they have Insurance to cover any damage they might do to your property or others, A tree falling on a car or someones house could cost bunches.BE CAREFULL and Good Luck

Get another estimate and be careful in some states oak trees are protected. Don't do it yourselve unless you have taken a special class and make sure whoever you hire is certified and they take nessecary safety precautions as it can be risky and you may be responsible for injuries.

get three estimates, require proof of liability insurance, and verify it by calling the insurance company, verify the contractor pays workers comp. never pay any more than 1/2 up front, and at that price make them remove the stump also.
cheeper is not allways better.

That sounds about right. They wanted $3000 for my pine tree. Its ridiculous so I removed it myself from my back yard. first started cutting it by small pieces for me to trash them easier, then I set the main trunk on fire for about 5 minutes. keep doing this for about 2wks and by the time you get to the stump it'll be so easy to pluck it off.
