That little light is the only way that the car's computer (PCM) can communicate with you. It doesn't talk, so it comes on to tell you that the PCM has detected a fault or failure in one of the systems or circuits that it monitors.
The SMART thing to do is to retrieve the codes (DTCs) to determine why it is on in the first place. It could be something as simple as a loose fuel cap, or it could be an indication that you have serious trouble headed your way.
Retrieve the DTCs, and with a repair manual follow the proper diagnostic and repair procedures.
REMEMBER------->The code(s) indicate a fault in a circuit or system, and NOT NECESSARILY a specific component. Follow good diagnostic practices to avoid wasted money, effort and time.

Good Luck

It can be achieved by disconnecting the battery, or using a scan tool to erase the DTC (diagnostic trouble code), but if there is a reason for it (the DTC), and the problem hasn't been fixed, the light will only come back on.

Not too sure about the buttons...have you checked your manual? Typically you can disconnect the battery for 5-10 minutes and that'll work. You'll loss your radio presets, but that's about it.

The only way is to use a scanner. This will also tell you why it came on in the first place.
