Another had come from the new marriage, so that the Captain felt it necessary to run the family with army discipline having seven mischievous and rebellious children. However his rules and regulations were no match for the fun loving children, led by the redoubtable Judy. It takes a tragedy to eventually bring the family together.

These seven children are the following:
*Meg - naive, romantic sixteen-year-old eldest sister and sometime surrogate mother to the younger children.
*Pip , 14 -, eldest brother, intelligent but badly-behaved.
*Judy, 13 - imaginative and lively, often leads the others into mischief and Pip's partner in crime.
*Nell, 10 - beautiful and slightly wistful child.
*Bunty, 6 - described as 'fat and very lazy'.
*Baby, 4 - was only a baby when her mother died.
*'The General' - the baby and the only natural child of Esther, who is stepmother to the other children.

This best selling novel, "Seven Little Australians", continuously in print for more than 105 years with over 40 editions published, was made into a TV series back in 1973 with Ethel Turner's son Adrian Curlewis as the co-producer.
