Or do they have to allow you to work the 2 weeks?

I want to be courteous and give them notice, but I also dont want them to say in a couple of days "we found a replacement so we dont need you here anymore." Then ill be out of 2 weeks pay.

They can be asses and fire you ...but most often they will allow you to work the last 2 weeks that is provided you actually do the work and dont be a slacker ( Im leaving anyway..so who cares..)
Here in BC canada if you quit your job you most likley will not be able to collect unemployment benefits , there are exceptions though..like if you are sick.
If you are fired from your job you will most likley recieve unemployment benefits , I did when I got wrongly fired from a job 4 years ago.

So as long as you are courteous and give them the notice, continue to do your job properly untill the end ..they should have no reason to fire you..unless they are upset with you for quitting and if they do fire you , you should recieve some kind of severence pay.

Good idea is to have it set up with the new employer that you can start early if the other company cans before the 2 weeks is up. It is legal and it happens all the time. You know too much and they don't want all their secrets to be compromised by an unfathful employee. If your job is so important they will want you around to train your replacement. They should also have had people quit in the past, what happenned then??

They sure can. Once you put in your 2 weeks then can tell you that they only need (AKA want) you to stay till tuesday or some random day. But I do not think it is considered "Firing" cause they wouldnt do that well most businesses wont cause then you can file for unemployment and somehow they have to pay for that from the company or something. It will just be marked as you left/quit... It sucks but that the chance you take I guess when you go to leave out.

It depends on the state - if it's an at-will state, then they can fire you any time for anything. With two weeks notice, they COULD fire you and replace you, but it's not likely, unless they have someone already in mind. The interview process takes time, and most places have to advertise for applications, which takes more time.

I'd say give them notice, it's only polite and it won't be as likely to come back and bite you on the butt if you ever have to deal with your old employer/coworkers again.

Sure, they can fire you at any time. Otherwise, can you imagine the stuff people would be doing their last two weeks of work knowing they had immunity from getting fired? It could be disastrous. The laws vary from state to state as to why you can be fired, but in "right to work states," they don't really need any reason. Some states require some valid excuse for firing someone, but just about anyone can think of something that would work (rude to a customer once, mouthed off to the boss, BO, "unprofessional," etc.).

It is not unusual for an employer to dismiss the employee right away. The employer might be concerned about theft, poor customer relations or a disruptive employee.

At times the employer with pay the two weeks and have them leave right now.

Check the laws in your state.

I worked at a local TV station in my state. My boss left to work at another station in the city and wanted me to join her. So I gave my two weeks. When they found out that I was going to a competitor station they told me to just leave. Well it turns out that since I gave my two weeks, they had to pay me for it. It was sweet. My boss let me take the two weeks and I took the money and went on a great vacation, and came back to a great job!

It depends on the company. I have seen people have their employment terminated early when they give a notice to quit. But if you have a contract or union. You should be fine. If you have one. Read the employee hand book.

They can. If they have a written policy stating that if you give two weeks notice, they will pay you for unused PTO, then they still have to give you that. If they do, just call your new employer and let them know that you are available to start sooner.
