Yes. I think that he should either open the batting, or should come at no.3. I think that coach and the captain need to have full-faith in him. Likewise: Kevin Pietersen. England trusts him, and he responds them by scoring runs. He hasn´t got the great technique, either. Did he perform against Sri-Lanka and Pakistan? No. Because: He can only score on the leg-side area. So, if you take few fielders on that side, he will be stopped from scoring runs. He then will try to go over the top. Sometimes he will succeed, and sometimes not. I don´t know why all the peoples are saying that he is just plays like Afridi. In fact, I would say that he is not at all like Afridi. He hasn´t only got the power to score quickly, but, he has also got the ability to score runs in single and twos. He can also defend his wicket. He sometimes plays a rather silly shot. But, by far and more than that: He has led India to a victory. I got few exemplaries for that. For example these innings: 67* (* = not-out) against Zimbabwe.Chasing 255, India were 91 for 5 when Dhoni came out. He stayed at the wicket, and helped Yuvraj Singh to start a partnership with him. He scored all the runs with nudges and angles. And when assured that the match is won, he hit 3 sixes and 1 four(http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2005-06/OD_TOURNEYS/VIDTRI/SCORECARDS/IND_ZIM_VIDTRI_ODI6_04SEP2005.html click here for the scorecard).
Then: Needed 260 to win, India were 180 for 6. He once again scored with same style. And when they were assured that the match has been won, he hit 1 four and 2 sixes, in the score of 45* (http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2005-06/SL_IN_IND/SCORECARDS/SL_IND_ODI4_03NOV2005.html click here for the scorecard).
Then: Chasing 226, India were 91 for 5. He scored 38, and when the match was in their hand, he tried to go over the top and got out (http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2005-06/ENG_IN_IND/SCORECARDS/ENG_IND_ODI2_31MAR2006.html click here for the scorecard).
Then: India batted first and sent him as opener. At one stage India were 79 for 5. He scored 96 on 106 balls with 3 sixes and 10 fours. He got out, because he was really suffered by the hot and humid conditions. India lost the match by 5 wickets. But still, they got a respective total of 223 (all-out in 48 oers) (http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2005-06/ENG_IN_IND/SCORECARDS/ENG_IND_ODI6_12APR2006.html click here for the scorecard).

So, they were only the innings in which he didn´t try to score quickly, and thought of his team. Against Australia it was a same kind of situation but, he played a poor shot and got out. But, don´t forget that it was a "no-ball". And otherwise, he has unacountable innings in which the required-run-rate was over 8, and Dhoni led them to a victory. So, he isn´t like Afridi, at all................................

Rawal.

Dhoni is a batsman with a poor batting technique which is explained by his success only on flat pitches of the subcontinent. An opener has to posses special technique against the new ball bowlers. Hence Dhoni will be an absolute failure as an opener. But he is a gutsy player who can be effectively used during the middle overs to increase the tempo of the innings.

The above person has said dhoni is not a sensible person, he smashes everything like afridi...

well, I dont think so, if it is so, why would icc give a 1st rank to Dhoni. Hes a great batsman, got his own technique..

He doesnt have footwork doesnt mean he cant play good cricket. He can , he believes in himself, he just has a different technique. By they way, we have a mindset that every cricket will play alike. we should change it. And dhoni and sehwag are examples, and proved footwork is not necessary to score 309(sehwag) and 186(dhoni) ... they've shown the world

Ok I guess topic is going somewhere else

Heres my opinion buddy

Dhoni is ideal 1 down batsman!
sehwag and sachin are ideal for opening slot, and if sachin retires, then the place is Dhonis, Im all sure about that.

No i dont think he should come at opening or late... he should come at a very least... 7 or 8 because i dont think he plays very sensfull cricket! he just smashes like afridi but the only diffrence between him and afridi is that thier facial expressions.... otherwise they both play like each other smashing the ball in and out.... you HAVE! to take some lessons from the best batsmen of the cricket world The legend him self... Saeed Anwar... Dude it was a beautiful sight to watch that flamboyant left hander play cricket... He was What Batting is suppose to be done... What beauty what elegence what timing absolutly brilliant... that guy should get a NObel piece prize for batting such beautifully... Sachin is another great example of batting.... But saeed anwar is a leged i mean the guy reached 194 in ODI against thier rival India at politically unstable times and he didn't even got under pressured i mean Dhoni should learn to play like shewag and then come up otherwise he should be down at 7 or i think 8 that is where he can give his team a boost by scoring 6z otherwise not a good player in my eye....!

It depends on match situation and all. I dont think he should come as an opener on a regular basis. He is best suited to come when ball is not that new and even better when spinner are on.

If we have to send someone to hit when we are chasing any score around 300+ then it might be better to open with Pathan and Dhoni coming in at number 3 or 4.

Yes! he has the talent! i am a pakistani but i like dhoni very much, he is a gorgeous cricketer. he should be the top of the order but think one down will be good, an opener has to play formely, for that tendulkar is best but dhoni has to take one down position. Thank you!

After Shewag's yesterday performance I don't think any player replace Shewag or Sachin from open the inning. It's good for India that Dhoni come at No.7 becuz he is a good finisher.

It depends buddy

When the pitch assists movement and atmosphere assists swing, its always a good idea to open with specialist openers. thats sehwag and sachin... As dhoni hasnt got good foot work, its difficult for him to play the new ball

When the pitch doesnt have much assistance for movement, and the atmosphere is normal... then itz ideal to open the innings with Dhoni...

What do you think guyzz,,...
