Right now I am a sophomore at a community college and I live at home with my parents. In the summer of 07, I plan to transfer to a University. I really want to move but not into a dorm. I want to move into an apartment, but if I do that I would more than likely have to get personal school loans to pay the rent. Do you think that I should move into an apartment or just stay at home?

Stay at home as long as possible, I know it is a pain, but the less loans you have to pay off later, the sooner you can reach your other goals.

The first problem is to reach and understanding with your parents that you can come and go as you please, and you will study when you want. If your grades are good then clearly this is working. Of course you still have to live with your parent's rules. You might have household chores, have to be at the dinner table at a certain time etc. But, if you move into an apartment you will not only have to pay the rent, you will have to buy your own food, and pay the utility bills as well. Most college students can't afford this so they have to get a roommate, which can be a pain. No you understand why the dorms can get so expensive. They are mini-apartments with all rent and utilities paid.

The second problem is where to party when you want to. Your parents might not enjoy your friends talking until 3:00 am., so you will need a friend that lives in the dorms or has an apartment where you can meet.

If you can solve those two problems then it will be so much better to stay at home. If you need help with studying then talk to a few people in the class and form a study group. You can meet friends through this group or when you go out. Get involved in campus activates, like join a club. This will give you something to do to blow off steam, it will let you meet new people and get involved in activates that you never have done before, and it will look good on your resume.

Stay at home, if you move out on your own then your personal expenses will multiply by 10 or more. Taking $100/month to $1,000/month (no I am not over stating the cost). Worry about paying all these bills will only take time and attention away from your studies. Plus if you can't stand living at home anymore then you can move out. Most apartment complexes will still have vacant units or you can find a roommate that has some place to live. Your pickings will be leaner during the semester, but you can take longer to make your pick as well.

I would stay at home (depending on how far away the University is). I am in my final year of my Bachelor Program and still live with my parents. If you stay at home you do not have to take out any loans or etc to pay for your own place, you can save your money (if you work) so when you do decide to move out you know that you will not have the financial burden of trying to struggle to pay for your place, and finally if your parents don't mind you living at home until you finish school then stay home -- who can say no to a nice homemade dinner and a free place to stay? =D

If it's between getting loans to move out or staying at home, I would suggest staying home. Somehow when you're in college, it seems like when you get out and get a real job, you'll have tons of money left over at the end of the month. That never seems to happen and you can spend many years paying it back.

I would say stay in the dorms if possible. With you transferring in it will be hard for you to make friend intially. Making friends becomes that much easier when you live on campus because you're guaranteed at least one person you'll know. They'll have friends and so on and so on... Get the real college experience stay on campus!

omg whatever you do don't stay home, stay in a dorm cause then you'll get to experience college life and will be close to all your friends. Also living on campus is so much better than staying with your parents. I would definitely live in a dorm because you can party and get drunk on friday nights. Live the college life!

Move into the dorm for 1 semester. That's where you'll get your true college experience. Then you'll most likely meet friends to get a place off campus.

The best part of the dorm is when you need to study, most of the others around do also. This helped motivate me to do my work because everyone else was doing theirs.

Good questions. I would stay at home to avoid having to take out a loan. That way you don't graduate with that debt and maybe you can get a really nice place when you do gradutate and move out.

Dont be dumb like me.............I had the option of staying home during school and missed out on a lot of savings and always had to beg Mom for cash to survive. If mom is offering you a place to stay then be an adult and make the right decision to stay home until you are finished with school.

From someone that has a lot of student loans and other debt. Live at home with your parents if you can. It is a great way to save money. You have your whole life to live on your own and have debt!

Trust me... just stay at home. It is a huge burden when you are fresh out of school trying to make it on your own and have to pay back student loans.
