If you have a long dress from your days as a maid of honor, maybe you can have it shortened (to look less like a member of the wedding party) and wear it with different shoes and accessories. Of course, this is assuming you can hem the dress yourself or know someone who can do it on short order.
Check the sale racks of department stores. You might be surprised. Also, Marshalls or TJ Maxx. Those two are hit & miss though.

is it a fall wedding where it will be cooler?
is it in a church?
where is the reception?
depending upon these things, it varies what u should wear. To play it safe, what u can probably expect most people to be wearing is one of the nicer wrap style dresses that are everywhere now. I would go with something like that. Don't get the cheap looking kind. Wear one of nicer material, appropriate colors/patterns, appropriate cut, and sleeve length depending on weather. Wear some cute shoes that are dressy and maybe even fun, and wear some pearls or whatever jewelry matches that also looks nicer. Some lipstick, mascara, and a good blow-dry and u will be good to go!!

Since the wedding is on Friday, I would guess it would be at night. I would wear one of the new Wrap dresses, in either brown, black or a dark red. If you find a soil color dress, punch it up a bit with a brighter sweater, maybe baby blue with brown and a light pink with the black, I would stick with a black sweater for the red. Try to find out what colors are being used in the wedding and stay way from them.
I would go to Goody's, Ross, T.J. Max, or Marshal's. They all have cute clothes, but at a lower price.

You do not tell me what part of the world you stay at, so I will assume it it warm enough for maybe a nice dress. Try to remember you can wear mostly anything you can wear to church. Some of the stores you can go to are:
Fashion Bug, Macys, Catos,
It is hard to say since I do not know what stores you have but a nice skirt and blouse or a dress will be nice.

Macy's or Robinsons May. Wear a dress or try to find out what the color motif is and wear a dress of the same color. Just strut around the mall and u will find something that would be perfect for the wedding.

It depends on what time the wedding is and what kind of wedding it will be. Is is formal, semi-formal, evening, daytime? If its a semi-formal or formal daytime..wear a nice cocktail dress. IF its evening semi-formal or formal just dress it up more. If its a casual wedding just wear something nice...skirt/blouse, pants/blouse or even a dress. NO MATTER WHAT DON'T WEAR WHITE!!! or the color of what the bride is wearing. And if u know in advance the wedding party unless u want to blend in don't wear it.

Need to know:
What time of day is the wedding?
Formal or casual?
I would not blend with the wedding colors--------this would be rude to the bride and bridal party. They are the specials for
the day.
Is it just wedding and cake/punch in the church?
Is it a formal dinner with dancing?
All this decides what you should wear.

Ask what other girls wear to the wedding. Just wear some nice dress, or a suit, and remember: it's bad tone to look prettier than the bride!
Cheers :)

If it's formal, you probably could get away with a party-type dress as long as it's not slutty looking. If it's not formal, pretty much anything dressy will work, whether it be a dress, skirt & top, or even slacks. Have fun!
