I got this from the website www.gomath.com

The length of a rectangle is 12 cm more than the width. The perimeter is 44cm. What is the dimension of the rectangle in cm?
Here is the answer:
Let x = width in cm.
Then x + 12 = length in cm
Therefore
2[x + (x + 12)] = 44
4x + 24 = 44
x = 5, x + 12 = 17
Just dont know where the 5 comes from?

Thanks

When it says 4x + 24=44, you subtract 24 from each side, therefore 4x=20. Then divide both sides by 4. So x=5

As stated

4x + 24 = 44
then: 4x = 20
then: x = 5.

the 5 is the result after solving the equation.

2[x + (x + 12)] = 44
4x + 24 = 44
The skipped a step right here (subtract 24 from both sides)
4x=20
x=5
