My brakes work fine, but I notice some brake dust on my front rims. Figure I would go ahead and get it done, but just hate the hassle from the guys in the garage. The last two times I have had brakes done, they have tried to charge me about a thousand dollars both times.

Depends what is wrong. Just replacing pads should be under $100... but if a caliper is stuck, a line is leaking, or master cylinder is bad you could pay $1000+

Ask them for an itemized list. Any good garage will also keep the old parts to show you (so you know they were really replaced)

Take the time to find a mechanic you trust totally.

Have the brakes checked often, long before you see problems. This will save you the cost of replacing rotors.

Call a local auto parts store, tell them what car you drive, and ask them the cost to buy replacement brakes. A good auto parts store will even be able to give you an estimate of how long it will take to change the brakes. Depending on the area you live in, the mechanic will charge between minimum wage and $$$ per hour. Do some quick math and you'll have a range of what the brake job should cost.

what the bozos above didn't mention was a lot depends on what kind of brake pads your ride has in the 1st place and what type of car it is - Semi Metallic pads for example create more dust then ceramic pads - and to compound the matter some cars wear pads out faster then others simply because of there design. How and where the car is driven can also play a role in how they wear. So unfortunately on some cars the dust is a normal thing to see even if the brakes are still in decent condition - If your a total num nut with fixing things then take it to 2 different shops and get 2 different opinions before you start spending money on it - and don't mention the 1st shop to the 2nd shop - I've been doing my own brakes for 35 years - It's not a difficult job but theres not a lot of room for mistakes to be made either

If your brakes work fine don't spend money on something that doesn't need fixing. A little brake dust on your rims means absolutely nothing that is normal because the material used for the pads will produce dust (wash it off if it bothers you). If you can, remove the front wheels and have a look through the top of the callipers to check the thickness of the brake pads. If you can see that they have plenty of meat (pad material) on them still (about 1/4" or more is good) they are fine. If you go to the brake shop and say ' I think my brakes need doing' then they will think you are not mechanically savvy then they will take advantage of you. If you are unsure take it to a few places and ask if they can give you an inspection report. For your safety and others your brake system should have a system flush and fresh brake fluid at least once per year.

Yes they are usually scamming om brake jobs.
I've over payed before because I didn't have time to do it myself.

If you have a quote log onto jcwhittney.com and price the parts then add a generous 2 hours of
labor per axel. Meaning 2 hours for the rear and 2 hours for the front.

Oh and watch out for replacement rotors the ussually put on lighter weight one then factory and charge full price. These canot be cut in the future. You must cut the rotor if you want the job to last.

brake jobs depend on where you take it and what has to be done, you take it to some place like Firestone or tread quarters you my Friend are going to get ripped off, but there are allot of good places to go like Minaki but the best place to go is to find a mom and pop business that aren't out to screw you and they will most time call you and let you know what parts are bad and give you a price quote so they know what to do next, but no matter where you take it to 1000 is way to much you can replace the whole brake system and still have money left over from a grand. My advice is to find some family owned place that you think you can trust and if you keep going to them they will treat you well.

damn take it to a dealer before you take it to them . it shouldnt cost over 39 bucks a wheel. they love see you coming. dust on the rims doesnt mean anything except youre riding your breaks a little. does it make a striking noise when in motion.
