I need to write a balanced equation for the reaction of Zinc(metal) and Hydrochloric acid (aqueous).
I know it's simple enough cos I used to do it but my brain is rejecting all sense!
Anyone able to answer to a simpleton?
Cheers:D

Ok, so how do I know when zinc metal changes to solid and same with others?

Easy!

Zn (s) + 2 HCl(aq) ====> Zn+2(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) + H2(g)

Actually, the net reaction is:

Zn(s) + 2 H+(aq) ====> Zn+2(aq) + H2(g)

the chloride ions in the acid don't really change, so they can really be ignored in the net equation.

a metal and an acid, will produce salt and hydrogen gas.
in this case, Zn is the metal and HCl is the acid.
The reaction will look like this.

Zn (s) + HCl (aq) ---> ZnCl (aq) + H² (g)
[the ² is supposed to be at the bottom.]
ZnCl is the salt. However, this is the unbalanced equation.

To balance, simply add a 2 in front of HCl as there are 2 hydrogen atoms at the products. and since there's a 2 in front of HCl, u have to balance the ZnCl at the product by adding a 2 in front of it too. Lastly, since there's also 2 Zn atoms at the product, add a 2 in front of Zn (reactant) to make the whole equation balanced.

So, it will look like this.
2 Zn (s) + 2 HCl (aq) ---> 2 ZnCl (aq) + H² (g)

i hope this is right and i hope this helped. :)
