It's my first big move and I have no idea whether kits are a better option than buying individual boxes. I still don't know how many I will need and I would hate to buy more than I need -- prices are very high!!! Thanks in advance for any tips or ideas!

Try www.craigslist.com. People usually advertise free boxes from their moves. All you need to do is call and pick them up. Good Luck

Try WWW.ULINE.COM. They specialize in packing materials. You can buy boxes in bulk. You can also try your local grocery store on Friday nights/Saturday mornings. They usually stock up for the weekend on Fridays. Banana boxes are great for fragile things and the boxes are extra sturdy. Sometimes they break the boxes down but you can use tape to secure the bottom of the boxes. Later if you decide you need wardrobe boxes or other speciality boxes you can purchase as many as you need at UHAUL.

Also, be careful about how much you pack in each box. Don't pack large boxes with heavy objects that nobody can lift. Use large boxes for bedding, pillows, lamp shades, etc. Always pack books and heavy objects in smaller boxes so they are easier to lift.

Sometimes when someone else moves into town, they advertise their boxes.
You can get boxes free from the grocery stores, and recycling dumpsters.
Ask a friend who works in an office for copier paper boxes.
Start packing the things you don't need out right now, and that will narrow down how many more boxes you'll need.

I've only moved twice but the best boxes are banana boxes. They are double handled due to the way the top box lid slips over the bottom box. I got all I wanted from Shop & Save, but you need to call ahead or stop by so they save them for you. There's a dirty or semi-dirty sheet of light cardboard covering the hole in the center, for ventalation, so you need to take that out and replace it with newpaper and it works fine. The boxes are free for the asking.

Before you buy boxes, go to the stores in your area and ask if they have boxes you can have. Most stores just through away their boxes, so you can get these for free. Good places to check are Walmart, supermarkets and liquor stores (good sturdy boxes). Ask at the customer service desk or find a lonely looking clerk to help you out.
Have fun!

ask your local grocery store or gas station to save you some on their delivery day.

I always hit the liquor store, though.
Knock out two birds with one stone!
