Also, if it was for music first, did they know they were going to create the same media for computer data? Wether or not that is true, if music was first, did they settle on the compact disk as a common medium for computer data storage simply because of convenience? That is to say if they created CDs for computer data first, would it have bee a different size or format? I just wonder why they are exactly the same.

Compact disk is just a carrier, the system on the disk is CDFS and it can store anything basically "AS LONG AS IT IS DIGITAL i.e. 1010101010101" Music is basically digital data, and computer data or non music content is data as well, it depends on what way you want to use it, it just has to have a proper reading medium, it can be a cd player in your car or it can be a computer cd-rom reader / writer. So in short there is no such thing as computer data and music data, both of them are digitally stored on the disk and can be read by a cd reader.

For music.
The compact disk came out in the early 80s. Before the PC as we know it existed.
In the early 80s, a 10 megabyte hard drive was huge. Computers worked just fine with 4 megabytes of RAM. External storage was usually in the form of 5 1/4 inch floppy disks that held 180 kilobytes of data. This was plenty.
CDROMs for computers didn't get popular until the late 80s when they became powerful enough to require them.

The since dead president of Sony wanted them invented and they should only contain enough space for his favorite sonata; 39 minutes. They were only for music at their inception.
