I remember an outfielder named Dan Thomas that could not play on weekends because of his religion. He did die young (age 29) but I would not speculate on the cause.

Rick Ankiel was a terrible pitcher who the Cardinals sent down to learn how to be an outfielder. The Angels had a relief pitcher named Don Moore who gave up a walkoff home run to the Red Sox Don Henderson in game 6 of the 1986 ALCS and later shot himself.
