Is it Ernie Shore?

In a 1917 game, Babe Ruth walked the leadoff batter and was then ejected for arguing. Shore relieved him, the runner was caught stealing, and Shore retired the next 26 batters he faced.

I remember a similar situation in the 1950s or 60s where the guy pitched a perfect game, but it went to extra innings and in the 11th, the other team scored so he was the losing pitcher even though he had thrown the equivalent of a perfect game. Does anybody remember this similar (but obviously different from what you describe above) situation?

it is not Ernie Shore, for 2 motives: (a million) collectively as he have been given 27 outs, he basically confronted 26 batters (he picked off the batter that Ruth had walked, and that out for this reason wasn't to a batter); and, (2) he did get credit for a no-hitter - technically, a shared no-hitter with Ruth. i've got self assurance the respond you're searching for is Shore, even nonetheless it is not superb as phrased.

Hmmm, good question.

I'm not sure who it was, but I'm guessing the first (or the first 2 or 3 . . . ) batter(s) reached base safely, at least one got a hit, THEN he managed to retire 27 in a row !

Harvey Haddux. Pitched a perfect game (or no hitter) through 9 innings and lost in the 10th or 11th inning.

You don't say how many batters he faced. He could have given up hit(s) before retiring 27 in a row.
