You have to justify this gap. You must show some valid reason to the satisfaction of the interviewer.

If you had this break in spite of the fact that you were seriously looking. Then you already know the answer.

During aerospace layoff people were without job for long long time and every employer was aware of this fact and most good employer would not ask this Q?, as a courtesy.

Your answer should be I was engaged in self study program and looking for the job, I was contacting between 3 and 6 employers per week, but you must be able to answer follow up questions.

At the local library you may find this book please read it. You may want to buy it and read it. It may have a summary on Internet.

It really depends on your reason for the break. If you had a baby and stayed home to raise it, or a major death in your family or you planned to take that time to travel, I think most people understand and appreciate those types of reasons.
If on the other hand, you were just unemployed and unable to find another job during that time it will raise more red flags for a potential employer.
Even if you don't have a good reason for having a year off - come up with some constructive things that you did during that time so you don't sound lazy or unambitious.

If you can pass a Drug test and are willing to apply yourself and work hard, you will be a manager inside a year.
