Garnishing wages means they take money from your check to cover debts you owe. The government often does this to cover back taxes, government loans, and child support.
Is this what they are doing,or did they just lower your pay rate? As long as a company doesn't go below minimum wage, they are well within their rights to lower your hourly pay rate. They did state you did not sign a contract. If you had, and had your pay rate as part of it, then they wouldn't have been able to lower it.

When you fill out a job application it has a little paragraph at the end that acts as a contract. Usually it gives them the right to terminate you at any time for no reason, and do pretty much anything they want within the law. They can't pay you less than minimum wage, and they have to give you benefits if you work for 6 months full time, but otherwise they can pretty much do what they want. It depends on how much of an asset they feel you are to the company.

I think the word you mean is garnish. Are they taking .25 an hour and only paying you $11.75, or is it just .25 per paycheck? What is the deduction for, specifically? In addition, since you didn't sign a contract, they can lower your rate of pay at any time. So, is it a true garnishment, a payroll deduction, or a decrease in pay?

A Garnishment from your payroll check is usually from a source outside of the company. Like if you owed child support, a loan you didn't pay etc... You need to contact Human Resources for your company and find out what the .25 cent garnishment is for. If it is court ordered the have to take it out of your pay.

If it is a true garnishment from a court order then your company is forced legally to withhold the funds, and they can't opt NOT to, nor do they have to notify you.
Pay your debts and you won't get garnished!
