Yes it is true, that if it had not been for the French, we would have lost against the British. No doubt. So, we have spent an estimated 300,000 American lives protecting them through 2 world wars. Why are you worried about the French?
The French have always looked at the USA like the USA looks at the wet back Mexicans crossing the boarder. Uneducated in any way with no class of any kind. True life law breakers.
I really don't think much of the French, They are a snooty stale type of people with no goals in life.
The statue of liberty was only the top part of the statue. The USA built the base. The top part was a gift to stop a war between the USA and France. Really it was to keep them from getting a big ole American boot hung in their @ss.
