Let's face it..it didn't work with Connie Chung, or Barbara Walters.
Why would the annoyingly cute and cloyingly winsome Couric be able to pull it off
Older men have the gravitas......and we need gravitas for the evening news....if we we're talking about the latest cute animal in the zoo factory, or what COACH handbags has in store this fall,
Katie's your girl...you want hard news, you've arrived at the wrong place...only greybeard older men can pull off the evening news...sorry Katie!

sometimes reality itself is sexist...look at the cruel joke god played on men and women...men peak at 17 and women at 35.....so does that make God a sexist?
LOL. I think not.....and people, INCLUDING
women, respect older men doing the news
per the gravitas thing.......there is not one
woman in network news with the proper
gravitas right now, except for Andrea
Mitchell, Alan Greenspan's main squeeze.
She has big time gravitas, and they have
her doing lame political remotes, while
the Koala Bear hugging Kouric is in the limelight...who ever said life is fair?

Here is the only woman in network news capable of pulling off a nightly evening newscast, but she's not CUTE or young enough, evidently......so I guess that makes the networks sexist too..

BTW, I always thought Andrea Mitchell
was attractive as well......older women can be hot too.......and her intelligence makes her even more hot, unlike the Coach handbag hugging Kouric...

evening newsreaders for the three majors
generally write their own copy, with staff input, and do their own research on remotes, like war coverage....you might
be thinking of local anchors, and even many of them write their own copy.....
and some still mix it up with reporting from the field.......and thanks, you figure it out..
for the name caliing, which places you somewhere under 23....or a very immature
over 23 that is still in the name calling
poopoocaca stage.......so original to use
the ampersand for the a too, so we got the whole word in.....very classy move! LOL!

Shermy, very well said answer...and it does suck......its the way the country
was founded....Paternal from the get-go..
what else but masculine-paternal can you call a country that killed all the indians,
brought in and enslaved outsiders, fought a bloody civil war, and so on!
Its the culture.....you have to go back to ancient Crete to see a strong maternal culture with female queens, and, if you ask, me, they did a better job, and without the wars! Look at Rumsfeld to see what that culture is doing to our country today..
Just kill everything that is foreign and/or moves! LOL!

LeeSee, I think this is a pretty important question, and hardly a waste of time for anyone on here. We are talking about people(Newscasters) who are forming
national opinions. Most people don't read papers, and, sad to say, prob are getting the only hard news of the day from Katie Couric..and if you haven't noticed per the Andrea Mitchell comments, I say sexist things in jest to spark conversation...read
all my comments and then tell me what I am..........I'll say anything to get people
thinking..that's all.....

Yogini, the only prob is, more people watch C-Span than watch PBS....PBS is a total non-player in actual viewership. I'm relatively erudite and can't remember the last time I watched PBS for nightly news.
I don't even know if Mcneal or lehrer
are still living right now! LOL! Seriously,
we are talking about the mass of people,
and the mass of people watch the network
news and swing national elections.....
again, PBS is a non-player.....you never saw Mr Rogers anchor the news, did you?
Or Big Bird, for that matter!

2006-10-04 09:47:33 · update #7

Yogi, Cokie Roberts is excellent.......I'd be the first to agree with you on that...so are any women in the sunday morning political
roundtable shows...so I guess Kouric and her airhead stewardess-style reporting is an affront to men AND women.......when
the networks egt over the over 40 is ancient
syndrome for female anchors, we might be getting somewhere.....

2006-10-04 09:50:50 · update #8

BTW, CBS hired katie as much to get her
OFF the Today show for the CBS morning news sake, as it was to prop up the evening news...and BTW, Katie got 140
million for 7 years, which comes out to
20 million a year, five more mill than she got for the hug a koala bear today show gig......so who's the dummy? Certainly
not her, salary-wise..hey, if CBS is willing to pony up 20 mill a year for a tupperware-
saleslady type newscast, more power to her....I'd be happy to do the news myself for 20 mill a year!

Jianne, you made me crack up about the
"cackling hens" of the view, including the
head honcho, babawawa, who makes
me blanche everytime I have the unfortunate experience of accidentally
turning on a station with her on.......she
turned back female anchoring's cause single handedly with that woonderful
"speech impediment" that isn't...It's not even an impediment, its just the way the b i t c h talks!

Elizabeth Vargas did a great job filling in for Bob Woodruff when he was hurt in Iraq. It was given to Charlie Gibson - I love him.

Katie Couric is just obnoxious to begin with.

In addition to being atrociously sexist, you're simply wrong. PBS has several women on it's News Hour who have plenty of credibility and authority when reading the news or interviewing. Margaret Warner and Gwen Iffil come to mind. Cokie Roberts is also excellent.
Maybe CBS figured that we're growing up enough as a culture to accept a woman as the anchor of a large news program. CBS is supposedly the network that leads the ratings in older viewers, so hopefully that means that older men and women are ready to hear a woman interviewing and reading the news.
By the way, Tom Brokaw was deemed too handsome to read the news, and in his younger days, some people criticized Peter Jennings, too. Neither had gray beards, but Jennings did a great job and Brokaw is fine, too.

OK. It looks like you don't want any serious answers, but here goes. I'm not crazy about Katie Couric as an evening news anchor. Nor did I like Connie Chung or Barbara Walters all that much. However, I do like Campbell Brown, Ann Curry, and Diane Sawyer. Not all male reporters are cut out to be news anchors either. The women have to work harder and longer to get a chance to be int this "good old boys" club.

I can't stand Katie Couric. This "perky"crap should stop at least at 25 or 30,and even with her "new" face, and the magic of the cameras slimming her down and airbrushing the hell out of her,she still annoys the crap out of me.And we all know she passed 25 or 30 eons ago.Give me back Walter Cronkite, Peter Jennings,Charlie Gibson or Tom Brokow any day.As a mature woman,I would much rather have a take charge, nice looking man feed me my news any day.I know I'm probably going to ruffle the feathers of both sexes, but this is just how I feel. And I may be old fashioned, but I still believe there are some things that should be left for men to do.I don't want someone with a beauty pageant smile telling me about wars and famine. This is serious business. It's a shame that EVERYTHING has to be made "sexy" these days. There is nothing "sexy" about war, children dying,or the famine going on in this world. And as far as Coach handbags, leave that to THE VIEW,and that bunch of cackling hens.I agree there are much more important thing in this day and age than what kind of handbag to use.Besides why do I need to hear about something I can't afford, nor makes any difference in this world or my life.I guess we'll both get blasted for this, but I always say we have freedom of speech, and it doesn't apply to just a certain group,it's for all of us to enjoy. Take care and God bless
P.S.S. I do enjoy once in awhile Wolf Blitzer on cnn.I'm glad I could bring a smile to you today. And you would think that with the $ Babawawa has made, she would get some speach lessons. Also Kudos to you for "stirring" the pot,to get people thinking and participating in an open forum. Also, you saying that babawawa set back the news anchoring for women,I couldn't have said it better. And this "view" thing, embarasses the hell out of me,that this is "ALL" women can talk about. As if it wasn't bad enough before, lets add insult to injury by adding Mr.Rosie O'Donnel. But as they say to each their own. Take Care

Wow. That's a very sexist comment to make. Katie Couric wouldn't have been offered the job if the executives didn't think that she was right for the job. I'm sure she does a much better job than you ever could.

My friend have got a promotion email from this outlet store and acquired one there. Not really remarkable with the delivery service speed but did save money about 71% and pleased to have this. The quality is truly fine and also right until now not find a defects.

I agree with you about Katie, but there is someone out there who can pull it off. It's really not fair that men can be gray-haired & craggy & women still have to look good. Believe me, I understand this question more than you know. I was the "son" my father never had. Grew up fishing, camping, etc. Was a mail carrier (on street routes) for almost 20 years. I had to prove myself to men my whole life. And, you had to be twice as good to get half the respect.

Well, the news is not meant for older men only. Its meant for everyone. Women find some things interesting that men don't- oh well. News needs to be open to everyone who is watching it, not just one particular group of people.
Thats how they get more people to watch their show.
