I play the frenchorn (which is a musical instrument if you have no idea what it is). And we have auditions for chair placements and to decide which band you would be in and such, and we have to play either in front of everyone and/or the director. But everytime it is my turn to play I get extremely nervous and it messes up the way i play, espeically because being nervous and the air required to play my instrument gets all messed up. Are there any ways that can help me stop being nervous so that I can really show my director how i actually sound?

Everyone gets nervous about this kind of stuff. I did but eventually you have to focus on the music and not who is listening to you. Don't try and picture them in their underwear that's silly. Focus on the music and feel the music as you play each note. Make sure if you are reading music that you pencil in marks to remind you to breath and when to crescendo etc. Just focus on reading. Try it at home or with a group of friends, or at a church function where you really don't know everyone.

When I moved to another school in a completely different state I did the same thing. I was a year younger than everyone else and that made matters worse. (I play trumpet by the way). We had to memorize and play scales and I would always mess up. what helped me was to try and play a bit louder than normal so I could get the air flowing right (and since you play f. horn you want the air fast and even). Also if you have a book like Arban's (it's a big book of techniques for trumpets, f. horns may have one?) practice songs that you don't know. After a while you'll get better and better and maybe more confident in what you're doing and think that the music is easy so you'll play it right. It's really embarrassing to play by yourself but just pretend that it's just you practicing at home or wherever. Oh and private lessons can help too!I hope I helped!

I have had an experience like this. I play the saxophone and it took me awhile to stop becoming nervous in front of crowds, but what always helped me was get a small group together and make it bigger each time you build more confidance.

For the auditions (when playing in front of the audience), IGNORE what's in front of you. FOCUS, concentrate on what you are about to do. Think there's nobody out there, you are just enjoying (playing) the frenchhorn, and that's all you care. Good luck, enjoy :-)
