the rating depends a lot on the RPM, it will say so many horse power for this many RPM's. I have a Kohler engine and it has twice the power of a Briggs and Stratten engine of equal horse power. I have a 1/3 horse power electic motor on a big air compressor, the motor weighs about 50 pounds, my neighbor bought a Coleman compresson that said 5.5 horse power peak, the motor is like 3 1/2 inches square. Anyway the thing burned out in short order. There are factors that need to be considered in determining the horse power.
