I would say a hero of sorts. He tried to get it across to the kids that he was a coward to try and prevent them from going down the same road as him and succeeded I would say. He had seen what his life had become and didn't want them going the same way so in truth he was a hero pretending to be a coward and as such made the film one to remember for ever!!!!

Hero. He may have come across a coward at the end, but he was faking it, only to try and protect the kids from leading a life like he had.

He was really scared so he was a coward trying to be hard. I loved that movie. The guards drugged him to the chair screaming and yelling.
