Hard to know. But if you enjoy thinking about that sort of thing, try out some cyberpunk -- a genre related to science fiction, except it tends to be set in the nearer future. Not necessarily so soon as 10-20 years though. But it takes current trends and extrapolates them into what they might become. Neal Stephenson did amazing things with gated communities, pizza delivery, LA traffic, and storage units in Snow Crash. Computer navigation probably will look like the Matrix, if only because the people creating it have all read William Gibson. :-)
It does seem though that we'll have to hit bottom, or least get very very close, societally and environmentally before we start to take these problems seriously. Especially in the U.S.

We will still be at war.. trying to make a living will be tuff. with all the illegals, the wage is dropping to nothing. I welded back in the lats '70s was making $17.00 an hour. Now production welding is 8 or 10 an hour. To get ahead now and in the future.. a person has to get a business and put all this cheap labor to work for U.
