Hmmm. Do people ASK questions just to get points? Why?

I can't imagine anyone asking a question about how far a snail crawls in a year (as you did) except to get two points.

I surely can't imagine asking a question about men getting "off on the sight of a rugby game" (as you did) except to get two points--or maybe to "get off" by asking questions.

Points? Why would anybody do anything just to get points? For instance, why would men run around a field throwing an oval ball backwards and risking getting tackled just to cross a goal line with the ball or kick it through a crossbar? Would it be just to score points?

Why would people hit balls with sticks or try to kick them past a goalie or throw them through hoops with nets, except to get some points?

Points seem almost as important to some men (and women) as $$$ or euros, or whatever. Why?

But, to answer your question: When I have asked questions, I have never had a single answer that I thought was JUST to get points. Answerers seem to like sharing their ideas and trying to help somebody else.

I never answer questions (certainly not ones like this one) just to get points. I actually think the whole point system is silly. BUT, I admit up front, that I do like getting selected as Best Answer. Is that the point of this game? But actually I choose questions to answer because I think that are interesting or important or, like this one, just sorta strange.

However, when I vote for Best Answers in the category I know best, I often find answers that have been written just for the points (sometimes admittedly). I also find answers that seem to have been written just to make fun of the question or the reader or the process.

My point is that points are absolutely irrelevant. Except to people who like to score points. Or "get off" on points. Hmmmm.

I don't answer questions just to get points. I asnwer them to help people. The points are nice to see on the screen but honestly how will they help you in life? It is so nice getting a you've got the best answer email(not angling for it just telling you how I feel about this). I just want to help and hopefully make someone a bit happier in life or share some wisdom I have come across that might make their lives richer. I believe in Karma. I don't need to recieve but I need to give.

I do not, if that were the case I would not flick through the lists of questions the way I do.
Helping people is fun and I actually spent two hours trying to find the correct answer to one question.
There are a lot of point junkies around though.

No, I don't think so. Modern life pigeon-holes people into jobs and fixed roles in society. Often there is no opportunity to share accumulated knowledge without looking like a smartarse. This, and other, websites provide an outlet. A lot of it is trash, but often there are genuine questions by people who want to know, answered by others who want to share and give.
