i was so shocked by his death. i still feel sad for that, and in a few days (october the 30th) is going to be 13 years since his last night at the Viper room. He was so talented and could have had such a brillant future! Dogfight makes me feel so bad! i think that that was his best film, but i love all his movies. he was so adorable in indiana jones outfit! he will always be the one for me

I do. I can't believe it will be 13 years this year and his brother, Joaquin, just picked up where he left off.

My favourite River movie has to be 'Stand By Me' where he plays the tough kid with a soft heart. I have to agree with you he does make a wonderful young Indy.

I love that they dedicated 'Interview With The Vampire' to him, after they re-casted his role to Christian Slater, that was very thoughtful.

It's an awful shame when you lose good talent so young and people still aren't quite sure how or why he got into the drugs that were his downfall in the long run, when according to his parents he was a clean guy and wouldn't touch anything like that.

Anyway, just like every year I will be lighting my black candle for him on the exact hour of his death hoping that his ghost, which apparently is following Johnny Depp around, will find peace and be at rest.

I still remember River. His brother is doing quite well too so that is a constant reminder. I think the last movie I saw him in was the one with Robert Redford called "Sneakers".

I believe he did have the talent to be a leading man for years to come. Remember his portrayal of a young Indiana Jone in the Last Crusade? Excellent adaptation of Harrison Ford's facial expressions were good enough to imagine that is what Indy looked like when he was younger.

It was a great loss. It is always a great loss of talent when anyone dies. Maybe we think of him and those who die young because of what could have been for them. It is sad, but also pretty happy considering he still lives in the minds of many people whether they enjoyed his work or not.

I had heard of him for years but then in English at school we watched his best film, Stand By Me and I saw who he really was and I found an obsession in him! I've got about 200 pictures!
I love him always he was one amazing actor, such a saddening death, such a young age to die at, we all all miss him forever. Does he have a gravesite? If he does I want to see it, he wasalso a real nice looking guy! I'm sure you guys will agree with that!

As soon as I saw this question, I had to answer it!
River Phoenix was and still is, one of the best actors ever known to Hollywood and the world. I disagree that Dogfight was his best film, I would absolutely say
"Stand By Me"
That's my all time favourite film and the fact that River's in it, makes it all the better!
I personally will never ever forget this amazing man.
Thank you for a brilliant question and a lovely reminder of the "Man of my heart"
R.I.P River Phoenix!

Oh yes, he could have had an incredible future, and his death was so sad.

Stand By Me has to be one of the best films of all time. It's certainly in my top 10. My 12 year old daughter watched it for the first time this summer and completely fell in love with him straightaway!

Absolutely!! Was just answering a question earlier about my all-time favourite film and said it was "Stand By Me" and how hilarious the film was but at the same time how poignant the film was when you hear at the end what happened to River's character in later life and sadly it turned out to be true in real life to. One of those strange, strange coincidences that happens in life. I don't know if you have the film but if you don't I'd advise you to buy it as they do a retrospective documentary with the cast and director and they talk about River. Real talented actor he was.

I Remember like It was Yesterday, If River Phoenix were alive today, he'd be up there with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as a Celebrity.

I wish Johnny Depp and The Viper Room Didn't Takeaway his Life.

I'm 34 so he was of "my generation". I had a huge crush on him in the late 80s!!!

Sad to think hed be 35 or 36 now if he'd lived. Wonder what sort of films he'd be making now?

Joaquim Phoenix has done some really good stuff though.

Yes, people still remember him. As a coincidence, I went out to eat last night with my husband and a little boy there at the restaraunt was named "River". He was this really cute blonde boy. Of course, I don't know if he was named after River Phoenix, but hearing the name did bring him to mind. Plus, I think anyone who knows who he is is reminded of him when they see his brother doing so well in Hollywood.

I cant believe it's been 13 years.I was so shocked too, my mum woke me up that morning really early to tell me, it was so sad. I use to have posters of him all over my bedroom walls. I thought he was brilliant in stand by me. It really was such a waste of talent.
