would you go a lifetime, if need be, just to reach it, or give up in the middle of it all?

Perseverance is a virtue, but sometimes the best course of action is to retreat.

Every so often it's a good idea to do a cost/benefit or risk/reward analysis. Once the cost or risk outweigh the benefit or reward, then it may be time to shift gears.

I don't look at it as quitting or giving up. With time, things change. Trends change, the economy changes, aging changes your needs and perspectives. If there are valid reasons for the change in direction, then follow through with the change. For example, a professional football player wants to win the Superbowl, but he's getting old so he retires from the game because if he continues playing he runs the risk of being crippled. Another example is an aspiring actor that isn't getting the parts, so she decides to take a job in sales because she's a single parent and must provide for her children.

Just make sure that you don't end up rationalizing so that it ends up being an excuse to quit rather than a reason for change.

My ultimate goal you take more than one lifetime, but achieving it would be worth it.

Just make sure you aren't in a Miller play (Death of a Salesman).

As long as I can move at least one finger, I'll keep going on. If the goal was worth while that is.

I think you should go into something full steam if you are truely passionate about your goal. Half-completed jobs benefit no one.
